How Group Feature Works in Canvas Courses

In Canvas instructors can allow students to create student groups. This option can be turned off in the course settings. Instructors can create group sets that can be used with graded online submission assignments and discussions. Each group set will groups associated with it. Each group within a group set will have discussions, pages, announcements, collaborations, and conferences that students can use to communicate with each other on the projects you have assigned to the group. Instructors can also use groups as private journal space for students to reflect on what they have learned in your course. Instructors can create Group Sets from the people page or when creating an assignment or discussion. Review the tabbed menu below to learn more.

Important Notes

Instructors will create a group set when creating new groups and can choose to allow students to self sign up. Groups can be created automatically or manually. The group set can have as many groups as desired; however, students can be a member of only one group in a group set.

For self-signup groups attached to graded discussions, students must sign-up for the group before their posts will display for the group discussion in SpeedGrader. Make sure all students sign-up before they start posting in group discussion.
