How to Create TurnItIn Assignments in Canvas
What is TurnItIn?
TurnItIn is a plagiarism detection service that allows instructors and students to view an Similarity Report of written work or other homework assignments. The system is designed to facilitate feedback between instructors and students on written work. Review the information carefully in the tabs below.

Below is a brief overview of the TurnItIn Options.
- Similarity Report – The Similarity Report gives instructors access to the largest database of content to check for plagiarism. Instructors can allows students to view their own Similarity Report so they can check plagiarism or improper quoting of content.

GradeMark – The GradeMark tools provide options for instructors to grade work online and add rich feedback for students. The tools include the following:
- Rubrics – The rubric feature in TurnItIn is more robust than the Canvas rubrics and provide clear expectations for what is expected in student work. TurnItIn has large database of pre-made rubrics Links to an external site. on a variety of subjects.
- QuickMark Sets – This feature allows instructors to create a set of commonly used feedback text that can be used to annotate a paper.
- Voice Comments – This feature allows instructors to quickly add voice comments as feedback for students.
- PeerMark – The PeerMark feature allows instructors to quickly set up Peer Reviews with a standard or custom set of questions. Note: Currently uses it's own viewer and is not available in Feedback Studio
- iPad app – All of the features in TurnItIn are available in the iPad app and assignments can be graded offline
How to Setup Assignments
Starting in Fall 2015 TurnItIn was integrated with Canvas using the LTI (external tool) option. In May 2018 TurnItIn provided another option for creating TurnItIn assignments using plagiarism review option. The LTI (External Tool) option is more robust but requires extra steps to setup whereas the plagiarism review option is easier to setup but is not as robust in features. Review the comparison in the link below to learn the details of differences between the two options. Choose the option that works best for your course.
TurnItIn Plagiarism Review (Links to an external site.)
This option is available in an assignment when the submission type is online submission with the file type selected. Once this option is selected, instructors will see the TurnItIn options. Configure TurnItIn settings as desired. For best results, let students see their own similarity reports so they can fix writing errors and resubmit to generate a new report. Students will use the Canvas submission process to submit assignments. Instructors will see a link to the similarity report in grades and SpeedGrader. Students can see the similarity report from grades or assignment page. This will display the assignment details page where the students will see a link to the similarity report. Review the guides linked below for instructions on how to setup the assignment. Note: When using Plagiarism Review option, students cannot view the similarity report from the Canvas mobile app.

TurnItIn External Tool (LTI) (Links to an external site.)
This option is available in an assignment when the submission type selected is the external tool option (see guide linked below). Students will use the TurnItIn submission process to submit assignments. Instructors and students will see the TurnItIn Assignment screen when viewing the assignment page. Instructors and students can click link to the similarity report from this screen. Note: The external tool option does not work with the new missing and late policies options in the gradebook or student view. If these options are important to you, please use the plagiarism review option.
Important Updates

Report types are indicated by the following icons:
- Error icon: the submission could not be submitted to the plagiarism service; resubmit from SpeedGrader
- Red half-filled circle icon: the similarity score is between 20% and 60%
- Green circle checkmark icon: the similarity score is between 0% and 20%
- Solid red circle icon: the similarity score is higher than 60%
- Clock icon: the submission is being processed by the plagiarism service
