ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Can I read and play rhythms?
A long sound is a WHOLE NOTE...
Has 4 beats. It looks like a donut with a whole in the middle and it does not have a stem.
If you cut that sound length in half it is a HALF NOTE:
A HALF NOTE has 2 beats. It has a whole in the middle, and it has a stem.
Cut the sound of a half note in half and you get a QUARTER NOTE:
A QUARTER NOTE gets 1 beat. The note head is solid and has a note stem.
Cut the quarter note sound in half and you get EIGHTH NOTES:
EIGHTH NOTES are beamed together with a horizontal line. 2 EIGHTH NOTES get 1 beat. That means that one EIGHTH NOTE gets 1/2 a beat.
Cut the sound of eighth notes in half and you get SIXTEENTH NOTES:
SIXTEENTH NOTES are beamed together with two horizontal lines. 4 SIXTEENTH NOTES get 1 beat. That means that one EIGHTH NOTE gets 1/4 of a beat.
We put these NOTES in MEASURES Links to an external site. and most of the time we will group them in FOUR (4) beats. We assign the beat to the QUARTER NOTE. That means there are FOUR QUARTER NOTES in ONE MEASURE Links to an external site..
We count a steady beat to QUARTER NOTES
or
EIGHTH NOTES (twice as fast as quarter notes) we count: (link to sight and sound)
