FORM - How we organize a collection of sounds into Music

 I can…

    • Define specific music vocabulary
    • Apply the knowledge of said vocabulary in order to compose a simple melody

Music is organized into "sections" that can be rearranged to suit your desires as a composer.

Verse Chorus Bridge
The storytelling part of the song. The lyrics of this section change every time the verse comes back, but the melody tends to be similar, if not exactly the same. The part of the song every sings along with. It has the exact same lyrics and melody every time it comes around. Usually only heard once, this is a completely different section that comes toward the end and usually "bridges" two Choruses.

The order of those sections is referred to as the Form of the song.

One specific type of Form is called Pop Form

Here's how pop form usually plays out:

Verse

Chorus

Verse

Chorus

Bridge

Chorus

Chorus

If we count up how many times each section comes around there are 2 Verses, 1 Bridge, and a whopping 4 Choruses in a standard pop song.

Remember that the Chorus is the same every single time it comes back. It's lyrics and melody never change. For over half the song, you're hearing the same music.

Which brings us to one of the most important concepts in music: Repetition
