National Tragedy - 9/11 |
The year is now 2001. Apple has released the first iPod, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is released, and the mapping Human Genome Sequence has just been announced. On September 11, 2001 New York City's World Trade Center (or Twin Towers) were hit by two airplanes. This was a major world event that shook the United States to it's core. Many of the reactions to this event are responsible for national policies, sentiments, and American culture of today. Recorded 6 months after this event, Song for the Lonely was originally written to be a love song. However, in the aftermath of 9/11, Cher rededicated the song to New York City and recorded the music video shortly after. The music video is important to this public display of solidarity. Cher is walking through the streets of New York and collecting people from all periods of American history. As they march forward, buildings are built rapidly, and the song ends with the New York City skyline. |
