Using Outcomes for Tracking Student Mastery

Canvas Tutorials Using Outcomes for Tracking Student Mastery

Instructor Creating Content Module

Why Use Outcomes?

Outcomes in Canvas course work in conjunction with rubrics and assignments to track student outcomes. The outcomes tool in Canvas allows instructors to add the course outcomes to the course. The outcomes can then be attached to rubrics that are attached to assignments. The outcomes will also display in the Mastery Learning Gradebook which allows instructors and students to track student mastery over content. The Mastery Learning Gradebook and Student Mastery Gradebook are course level feature options that must be enabled in a course. See course settings tutorial for details on how to enable feature options. View the video tutorial and Canvas Guides below for more information.

Important Notes

Outcomes can be imported into a rubric. When an outcome is imported into a rubric, the default option is to include the outcome rating as graded criteria option. If you don't want the outcome to be included as graded criteria, be sure to uncheck this option.

In the current quiz tool, a rubric with an outcome can be aligned with the quiz.

With quizzes in the new quiz tool, you cannot add rubrics to the quiz. You can align an outcome with a quiz or question.
