The Different File Areas

There are three different file spaces in Canvas.

  • Personal Files- All users have private file space connected to the user profile. When users access this space they can also navigate to any course or group space.
  • Course Files- The instructor has more editing rights with this space but students who are enrolled in the course will be able to see the files unless the instructor has restricted access to the files. Instructors can also choose to hide the File link in the course navigation. See Course Settings tutorial for details. 
  • Group Files- Instructors and students can create groups in a course. Instructors are not enrolled in groups but do have access to ALL groups in the course. Students will only have access to the groups that they are enrolled. Instructors can restrict students' ability to create groups in a course. See Course Settings tutorial for details. 

All the files space are basically the same in structure. Click Files in the left navigation to view the course files. View the tabbed menu below for more details.

Important Notes

The File section of a course is limited to 800 MB of space. DO NOT upload audio or video content here. Use your Studio account to upload new video. The video content can be embedded on  Canvas pages using the rich content editor.
