Editing Content with the Rich Content Editor

Canvas Tutorials Editing Content with the Rich Content Editor

Getting Started Module

Instructors can create content in assignments, quizzes, discussions, and pages using the rich content editor. All users can use the rich content editor when creating discussion replies. In groups students can use the rich content editor to create pages and announcements. One feature of the rich content editor is the ability to create and embed video or audio recordings directly in content in the course and discussion postings. View the video for below for more information.

Important Notes

Please note the rich content editor does NOT autosave content. If you accidentally leave a page, the content will be lost. It is recommended that students write discussion posts in another program such as GoogleDocs or Microsoft Word first and then copy and paste the text into a discussion reply. This creates a backup of your post if you have issues posting the reply. View this helpful guide Links to an external site. from the Canvas Community for tips on writing discussion posts in graded discussions.

If you are editing a page and accidentally delete content without leaving the page, in some cases you may be able to use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + Z to undo the deletion.

In discussions students can only upload images from the picture icon in rich content editor toolbar.

(Instructors only) When editing quiz questions in question banks of the current quiz tool, the rich content editor sidebar content browser will NOT display. If planning on adding images to question content, please refer to linked guides below. The process will be similar but you can add the images to the course files. It is important to have a folder setup in the File section of the course and set the desired restrictions on image folder. See the Instructor Files tutorial.

(Instructors only) In the new quiz tool, the rich content editor is slightly different and doesn't have all the same options as rich content editor has in all other locations. The right sidebar content browser will NOT be available to access course files. You can upload images directly from the toolbar. These images will NOT display in course files. See the following guide for details.
