How to View Course Settings
To view the course settings click Settings in the left navigation. Please note there are some options in course settings that instructors can configure and some they cannot. Review the tabbed menus below for more information.

Settings Instructors Can Configure
Below are settings instructors can configure on their own.
- Course Card Image - Instructors can upload an image to associate with the course card on the dashboard.
- Time Zone - Note: The default is set to Central Standard Time. If you change the time zone in the course settings, it will be changed for the entire course. If you need to change to the time zone you are currently in, you can do this from your account settings.
- Course Start and End Dates - You can change these dates; however, semester courses are ruled by section dates which instructors cannot change. Changing course dates will have no affect on section dates. There are several check boxes below course dates and you can choose uncheck these options if desired.
- Language Settings - This option will change the language settings for ALL students in the course.
- Large courses/SpeedGrader/Group option - Check this option if you wish to use the group feature with SpeedGrader.
- Grading Scheme - Check this option to enable a course grading scheme. You can edit the default scheme or add another from admin level.
- License - The default is set copyright. You can choose a Creative Commons license so you can share content in Canvas Commons.
- File Copyright - When this option is checked you must include copyright information for all files before you can published them.
- Visibility - This option allows you to determine the visibility of your course content. You can choose to make your course public. When choosing this option, all student data remains private.
- Announcement on Home Page - You can choose to display announcements on the course home page.
- Discussion Options - These options will display in course settings and the discussion index page.
- Student Groups - Instructors can choose to allow students to create their own groups in a course.
- Gradebook Options - Instructors can choose to hide grades summary or distribution graphs from students
- Disable Announcement Comments - This option is checked by default so if you wish to allow comments on announcements, be sure it is checked.
- Customize Navigation - In the course settings click the navigation tab. This will display a representation of your course menu where you can customize the course links.
- Canvas App Center - See Using the Canvas App Center
- Feature Options - There are many course options that must be applied as feature option.
- Share to Commons - This option allows you to share your entire course in the Canvas Commons. See Using the Canvas Commons.
- Student View - This option allows you to view your course as the test student.
- Import Course Content - There are several import options available.
- Export Course Content - Course or quiz content can be exported from a course.
- Reset Course Content – Use this option with extreme caution! This option will reset and delete ALL content in the course. DO NOT use in live course with student assignment submissions. Be sure to export or save the course to the Commons BEFORE using the reset course option.
- Validate Links - Use this option to check for broken links in your course.
Settings Instructors Cannot Configure
Below are settings instructors cannot configure on their own.
- Course Dates - All course dates are ruled by the section dates. Changing the course dates will NOT affect section dates
- Course Sections - Instructors cannot create or edit sections. Term dates are set by section and this is controlled by the integration with Datatel Colleague. . Please contact Information Systems and Services with any questions regarding course and section dates.
- Conclude this Course - DO NOT use this option! Semester courses are concluded by term date
- Delete this Course - This option will not be available in semester courses.
