Provide Alternatives for Time-based Media

In the WCAG 2.0, the guideline 1.2 states the following:

Guideline 1.2: Links to an external site. Provide alternatives for time-based media.

Time-based media can be any type of media that includes audio or video components and this means any video or audio component of a course must have captions associated with the media.

Why Captioning is Important

For hearing-impaired students this is crucial that you include captions that overlay the video file. This allows the hearing-impaired student access to the content so they can gain a full understanding of what is being said and performed onscreen. This also helps all students as they can watch the video with the captions turned on when they don't have speakers or can't use the speakers.

You can also include a transcript on same page with the media. The transcript should be in readable text format. The transcript should include all that occurs in the time-based media including full dialog between people and other sounds such as the response of audience laughing or clapping. Review the captioning guidelines below.

How to Caption Studio Videos

It is super easy to caption video in Studio. You can request a video be captioned. This process will take a few moments to complete. The resulting captioning file will require minimal editing. Be sure to edit and publish the captions once you are satisfied with the results. Review the following guide for details.

Important  Note about  YouTube videos

When you add YouTube videos to Studio, the captions will not import with the video. Please review the following guide on how to caption YouTube videos. Note: This will only work with videos that already have YouTube captions.
