Using the Multi Tool Templates
What are Templates?
The template feature is part of the Multi Tool that can be enabled in the course menu.
This feature allows you to create a page of content that can be duplicated using the module builder. This is useful for creating content that will be very similar in design. Once enabled in the course menu, click the Multi-Tool in the course menu. Select Templates. View the tabbed menu below for more information.
Front Page Options
There are two sections to the template feature. The first option is set the home page as the FrontPage. In Canvas this process requires many steps so it is much easier to use this option on the template page of the multi-tool. See the following guides to learn how to do this in Canvas and the next section to learn how to do it in the multi-tool.

- How do I change the Course Home Page? Links to an external site.
To create page as the Front Page for your course using Design Tools, click Multi-Tool in the course menu. Select Templates.
On the next screen the template options will appear. (1) Under the Front Page, click +Create "Home" Front Page. This will create a page in the course called Home.
A link to the page will display. (2) Click Open FrontPage for Editing. This will open the page in a new browser tab. You can edit the page and apply a Design Tools them to the page. (3) When you click Set "Home" to show Front Page button the page will set as the course home.
Template Options
On the template screen scroll down to the template options. Here you can create page templates for content pages, assignments, quizzes (classic only), and discussions. This is useful for structuring content that will be very similarly. For example, you may have chapter assignments that will be structured with a chapter reading and exercise. You can create a template in Design tools. Then in the module builder you can create content based on the template. See the following guides for more details on the Multi Tool.
This feature allows you to create assignments, discussion, page, or quiz templates for your course. This is especially helpful when you have assignments or pages that will have a similar format of text to display. It helps to reduce the amount of editing required to get course content ready for the semester.
Click the Multi-Tool in the course menu. Select Templates and scroll down to the template section. (1) To create a new template click button next to the desired template you wish to create. (2) The template will be linked below. Click the title to open the template to edit. Template content will have titles with the word “Template” in brackets. Leave this content unpublished. Once you have the templates setup as desired, you can apply them to content when you create new content using the module builder.
Important Notes
In the module builder, templates that include external TurnItIn settings will duplicate the description and points but will NOT duplicate the external tool settings when creating content based on the template. In Canvas you can manually adjust to the external tool settings for each of the assignments created based on the template.
In Canvas you can duplicate a TurnItIn assignment setup with the Plagarism Review option only. TurnItIn assignments setup with external tool option cannot be duplicated in the Canvas interface.
