Instructor Information for Lock Down Browser
What is Respondus Lockdown Browser?
The Lockdown browser software is only available in the proctoring lab so any exams using Lockdown browser must be proctored in one of Lake Land College's proctoring labs. See the Proctoring page for details on proctoring. If you have an out of district request from students, these students will NOT be able to take Lockdown enabled quiz. See instructions below for alternative options for the out of district students.
Lockdown Overview
LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking quizzes in Canvas. It prevents students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. When Canvas quiz requires that LockDown Browser, students will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser.
Important Notes
There are two parts to Lockdown Browser.
- Canvas integration - When lockdown browser is installed in a Canvas course, the link will appear in the course menu. The Canvas integration allows instructors to setup quizzes for Lockdown browser. Please note instructors must request access to the integration each semester. Contact Information Systems and Services.
- Lockdown Browser software - The software is installed in designated proctoring labs on campus. Student must login to the computer as instructed by the proctor to access the lockdown browser. See the Lockdown Browser for Students page for details on student experience using Lockdown browser.

Lockdown browser can only be used with quizzes from the current quiz tool. It cannot be used with quizzes created in the new quiz tool at this time.
Every semester instructors must request access to Lockdown browser in new Canvas semester courses. Contact Information Systems and Services.
How to Enable Lockdown
Review the video or text instructions below. Please note the Monitor settings are not available in Lake Land College proctoring labs.
Steps to Enable Lockdown with a Quiz
- Make sure the quiz has been created and published in the Canvas course.
- Contact Information Systems and Services Links to an external site. to have the course put in the Lock Down Browser sub account in Canvas. Please include course name, number, and section for each course you wish to use Lockdown browser for your quizzes. Once the course is added the Lockdown Browser link will appear in the course menu.
- In the course menu select the Lockdown Browser link. Please note the first time you access Lockdown Browser, Respondus will request access to your account. The next screen will display a list of tutorials. Click Next.
- Click the Chevron icon next to the quiz title and select Settings. The menu will expand with more options.
- Select the option next to Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam. If desired, check the box next to Require LockDown Browser to view feedback and results. This option will require students to use Lockdown Browser to view quiz results.
- If you have set a password in the Canvas settings, this will sync on the Lockdown screen. You can also create a password here that will sync with the Canvas settings.
- If desired, click Advanced Settings to view more options available. For additional information, select the [explain] link that follows each setting.
- Lock students into the browser until exam is completed - If this option is checked, it will prevent students from exiting the browser until the exam is completed. This is sometimes used in testing centers where a proctor can enter a password to exit an exam early.
- Allow students to take this exam with an iPad (using the "LockDown Browser" app from the Apple App Store) - If this option is checked it will allow students to take the exam with an iPad, using the free LockDown Browser app. DO NOT use this option. iPads will not be available in the proctoring labs.
- Allow access to specific external web domains - If this option is checked, it will allow specific students to access the exam with screen reader accessibility programs or access to other programs from specific domains. - Enable Calculator on the toolbar - If this option is checked, this allow instructors to provide students with a calculator while they take the quiz.
- Enable Printing from the toolbar - If this option is checked, this allows instructors to enable the print function in the LockDown Browser toolbar. This will allow students to print the exam after completing it.
- Do NOT set any of the Monitor options. The proctoring lab is NOT setup for webcams.
- Click Save and Close to apply the settings.
Alternative Options
If you have requests from students to proctor at a non-Lake Land proctoring lab, it is important to note that these students will NOT be able to complete the quiz in the lockdown browser. You can make alternative arrangements for these students. Follow the steps below.
- To create a duplicate of your quiz, create an export of the quiz and download to your desktop.
- Next you will import the quiz into the same course. This will create a duplicate of the quiz.
- Edit the duplicate quiz and assign the quiz only to the selected individual student(s). Additionally, you should also edit the quiz title and add distance proctoring in the title so you can distinguish between the two quizzes in the Lockdown settings. Save the quiz. Note: Only the assigned students will see the duplicate quiz.
- In the course menu select Lockdown browser. Edit the Lockdown settings for the distance proctoring quiz so Lockdown is not required. Click Save and Close to update the settings.
- In the gradebook you can excuse the distance proctored student(s) from the Lockdown enabled quiz. In the Lockdown quiz column next to the student's name type EX in the cell. This will excuse the lockdown quiz from the students' total score.
