What are Mastery Paths?

Mastery Paths allows instructors to customize learning experiences for students based on student performance or allow students choice of assignments. Instructors can identify activities for each learning path and decide whether an assignment should be required or optional. Please note Mastery Paths is feature option that must be enabled in a course first before you can applied mastery paths to content. Below are some of the advantages of using Mastery Paths in your course design.

  • Differentiate Instruction– When you can differentiate instruction especially in hybrid course, this allows students to move through each unit of instruction on their own timeline of learning without moving too fast or too slow.
  • Customize instruction– Now that you can differentiate instruction you can customize assignments to match students’ needs based on their scores from previous assignments.
  • Offer Student Choice– Mastery paths allows instructors to build in student choice of assignments. This helps to increase students’ intrinsic motivation for deeper learning.

Important Notes

Please note this feature requires careful planning in building the assignments for the mastery paths. It will be very difficult to make changes to the mastery paths once released to students. Review the assignment tutorial for details on how to mastery paths. 

Mastery Paths work best when all content is arranged in modules. Review the following module guides for details. 

The Mastery Paths feature is course level feature option that must be enabled in the course settings. Once enabled, the mastery path can be configured in the assignment settings.
