Using TurnItIn
What is TurnItIn?
The TurnItIn is a plagiarism detection service that is integrated with Canvas. It allows instructors and students to view an similarity report of written work or other homework assignments. The system is designed to facilitate feedback between instructors and students on written work. Please review the information carefully.
TurnItIn assignments will be similar to any other assignment in Canvas. Click Assignments in the left navigation of the course or Modules if the assignment page is hidden in the left navigation. Click the assignment title to view the assignment page.
Please note instructors have two different ways they can setup TurnItIn assignments. Please read the description each submission type to determine which option your instructor selected when creating the assignment. Review the guides for how the TurnItIn assignments are setup.
Important Notes
Students DO NOT have to create accounts on the TurnItIn website! Student accounts will be created the first time students access a TurnItIn assignment in Canvas.
When assignments are setup with Plagiarism Review (Submitting directly in Canvas) option the similarity report cannot viewed in the Canvas Student app. Use a desktop browser to submit your paper and view the similarity report.
Submitting Directly in Canvas
If an instructor is using the Plagiarism Framework review option, students will be submitting assignments directly in Canvas using the online submission option. Instructors may use this option to restrict the file types students may submit or with peer review and/or group assignments. Once you have submitted your assignment, the similarity report can be accessed from two locations in Canvas. The first way is from the assignment page. In the right sidebar click submission details. This will display the assignment details page. The second way is from the grades page. The similarity index score will display. Click the assignment title to display the assignment details page. Click the similarity index score to view the similarity report in Feedback Studio (TurnItIn's document previewer) in new browser tab or window.

Submitting Directly to TurnItin
If an instructor is using the external option, students will be submitting assignments directly to TurnItIn in Canvas. The TurnItIn Assignment Dashboard will display on the assignment page or in new browser tab or window. Instructors may choose this option when they want students to use PeerMark peer review system for peer reviews or grade in Feedback Studio (TurnItIn's document previewer). Once you have submitted your assignment, the similarity report can be accessed from the TurnItIn Assignment dashboard located on the assignment page. Once the similarity report is accessed, it will display in Feedback Studio (TurnItIn's document previewer) in pop-up window.
